The Alliance Habitat Resources Team is taking the next steps in their actions to address sediment management. In 2018, the Alliance funded the Louisiana Sand Availability and Allocation Program (LASAAP) through its Gulf Star Partnership. The project compiled data to create an ArcGIS-based decision support tool to assist natural resource managers and others in restoration decision-making. With the successful completion of this pilot project, the Team is now expanding the tool to other sites in the five Gulf states.
The existing GIS-based decision support tool identifies sediment availability and distribution at sites in Louisiana. With an award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the expanded tool will fill a critical need for information on sediment resources for use in the creation and restoration of coastal habitats at other locations in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The Water Institute for the Gulf is the contractor preparing the Gulfwide tool.
