Living Shorelines Workshop
March 7th, 2017
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
MSU Coastal Research and Extension Center
1815 Popps Ferry Rd
Biloxi, MS 39532
Living shorelines are a natural alternative to hardened shorelines for protecting marsh areas from erosion and wave energy. Hardened shorelines, like bulkheads, can worsen erosion or create steep drop-offs that impede access of wildlife to and from the water. Organic materials like oyster shell, sand, wetland plants and coir fiber logs are used in creating living shorelines. By using these materials, a gradual slope is created which becomes an effective habitat for wildlife and a stable shoreline more successfully protected from erosion.
Workshop Topics will include a living shorelines introduction, factors that affect living shorelines and their costs, and how to obtain the proper permits. Dinner will be provided and reservations are required.
