Land Conservation is an important tool for creating a healthier Gulf of Mexico. Land acquisition, easements, and stewardship can be used to improve
- water quality and water quantity;
- habitat for species of concern;
- community resilience; and
- quality of life.
Land conservation intersects with the Gulf of Mexico Alliance’s priorities and the specific actions of several of the Alliance’s Priority Issue Teams, including Water Resources, Habitat Resources, Wildlife and Fisheries and Coastal Resilience. As this is a topic that impacts the work of several teams, the Alliance’s Habitat Resources Team is happy to host a web seminar to provide an update on land conservation activities in the region in advance of the Alliance’s annual All Hands Meeting, which will be held this year in June in St. Petersburg, Florida. The web seminar will feature the following speakers:
— Julia Weaver will share an update from the Partnership for Gulf Coast Land Conservation, a network of nonprofit land conservation organizations from across the region. Julia will provide an overview of best practices in landscape scale conservation that the Gulf Partnership has identified. Julia will also share information about the 2019 Land Conservation Conference of the Gulf Region which will be held September 12 – 14 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
— Jennifer Roberts would like to introduce you to the Strategic Conservation Assessment of Gulf Landscapes project. Funded by the RESTORE Council the SCA project will develop a series of decision support tools that work to expand the reach of local efforts and support cross boundary land conservation planning across the Gulf. The SCA project team is working to develop a map-based tool that can be used to identify opportunities for land conservation that are rooted in social, economic, and environmental priorities of stakeholders and aim to achieve multiple benefits across the five Gulf States. Jennifer and her team are interested in identifying the best ways to work with the Alliance Priority Issues Teams to exchange information and data. Jennifer and her team will be participating in the Alliance’s Tools Café at the St. Petersburg All Hands Meeting, and will be working to share early iterations of their tools at the September Partnership for Gulf Coast Land Conservation Conference to be held in New Orleans
