Floods can happen quickly and without warning, and flood water can be powerful enough to move boulders and trees, and destroy property. In urban areas, flooding can occur at highway dips, bridges, and other low-lying areas. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than half of all flood-related drownings occur when a car is driven into hazardous flood waters.
Viewer Tip: Many cars can be swept away in just 18-24 inches of water. If you see a flooded roadway, do not try to drive through the water – water can be much deeper than it appears, or roadways may be damaged. And, remember, as little as 6 inches of water can knock you off your feet!
