The Embrace the Gulf initiative has expanded beyond just social media with regular stories in South Mississippi Living magazine highlighting interesting facts about native wildlife species. This month, black skimmers are in the spotlight. Skimmers are best known for their long bills, but they aren’t born that way! Black skimmer chicks have a top and bottom bill of equal length. The lower bill begins to grow during the chicks’ first month of life.
