October is National Seafood Month. You can celebrate by making sustainable seafood choices that support fishers, processors and dealers who are vital to our Gulf economy.

The easiest thing you can do is buy local, wild-caught seafood. Be sure to look for items marked as certified sustainable.

Here are a few fishy facts:

1. About 75% of U.S.-harvested shrimp comes from the Gulf.

2. Oysters can live up to 20 years.

3. We each eat about 19 pounds of seafood per year.

Shrimp, oysters, Spanish mackerel and more are in season, so find a great recipe (or two or three) and enjoy!
